Looking to throw a kid’s birthday party with a difference? Parties by Em specialise in children’s character parties, but have big plans to branch out over the next year! We had a chat with their creator, Emily about where they started and their plans for the future.
What is your back story?
I decided to set up my small business in my second year of university as I really missed all of the musical theatre activities I used to do back home. I had worked as a party host for a local party company in Billingham for two years before leaving to Edinburgh University. I thought there might be similar companies running up in Edinburgh that I could audition for, but when I checked there was nothing! I remember complaining to my dad about it and him saying “well why don’t you just do it yourself?”. So I did!
Describe your business in 3 words
My business in three words would have to be, fun, colourful and magical!
What would your dream holiday be right now?
This is going to sound really obvious, but I’d love a trip to Disney World right now! I have never actually been to see any of the real life princesses that live there and I imagine it’s an amazing experience. I’m also a bit of a roller-coaster nut, so I’d be going on all of the big scary coasters!
What is the best thing about running your own business?
My favourite part of running my business is definitely hosting the parties! I do love the behind the scenes work, but you can’t beat being with a princess for the day. There’s nothing better than when our princesses arrive at a kids party, and I get to see all the bewildered little faces looking up at them in disbelief!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I have just recently opened my business in Hartlepool, so I have a long way to go yet! But I hope in five years my business is continuing to grow and get better and better. My goal is to have top quality costumes, more character options and a lovely diverse cast to play all of our characters! I would also love to be able to offer a wider range of party options, maybe pamper parties are on the cards?
After Parties by Em, what is your favourite Hartlepool-based business?
My favourite Hartlepool based business has to be The Place In The Park Ltd! I used to go to Ward Jackson Park every week as a kid and it is so lovely to see all of the new opportunities and activities available for children and families there now. The Place in The Park is one of the few places I go with my family, my friends and for my business, so it holds a special place in my heart.
